Production of thin sheets by physical vapor deposition

The aim was the generation of foils with high strength and good forming behaviour for the production of micro components. Therefore a new generation method – magnetron sputtering was established, because conventional production, e.g. by rolling, is not possible because of the required thickness of the foils. Challenges of the process were to gain a con- stant foil thickness all over the width with a minimum of layer defects.
